My Travel Essentials & Tips

July 23, 2013

I travel throughout the year for work so I’m pretty used to stuffing my life into a suitcase on a regular basis. I know a lot of you are getting away this summer so I figured I’d share some useful tips about things I like to bring with me when I’m away and how I like to pack up my makeup whenever I need to travel with quite a bit of it!

ZIP IT! If I’m only going away for a weekend, I usually just bring one little makeup bag filled with the beauty products I use everyday. Despite me loving makeup and making videos about it, in my real life, I’m pretty minimalistic. However, if I’m going away for longer or if my trip involves me being on camera or filming a tutorial, I need to have a number of other options aside from my everyday simple stuff. I like to use zip lock bags to keep my makeup organized while traveling. They’re clear, affordable, and re-usable. I use small sandwich-sized bags to separate lipglosses, concealers & primers, eyeliners & mascaras, blushes & highlighters, etc. I use a larger one to hold brushes and maybe a few larger items like an eyeshadow palette or loose powder. (*NOTE: Some of your powder makeup like eyeshadows and blushes may be best coming with you on your carry-on as they can shatter. Although, placing a cotton pad or cotton ball in the compact prevents this!*) I lay them out at the hotel when I do my makeup and it makes it easy for me to spot what I need and quickly place items back where they belong when I’m done. Not having to dig through a big makeup bag for a mascara for an hour is luxury.

STEAM IT! You can’t iron everything, especially all those pretty little flowy blouses and dresses. I have a full-size steamer at home but this portable one works almost as well and fits in my suitcase. This is also a good option for those who may not have a lot of space in their homes to store an actual steamer. I never go within a ten mile radius without my McSteamy! 😉 You can find this Conair Handheld Steamer here.

WIRED! When you’re going to be away from home for a while, you’re probably bringing along your cellphone, your laptop, your ipad, your camera, etc. The last thing you want to do is forget your chargers. I place all of the chargers for my electronics in a small makeup bag or even a ziplock bag. In case anyone was wondering, this makeup bag is from Forever21.

travel-carry-on-essentialsSTAY FRESH & CLEAN! Airplanes are bacteria festivals. I always bring hand sanitzer with me on every flight to clean my hands and disinfect anything I’ll touch. I even use napkins to wipe down the window and wall around it with sanitizer because I might lean my head against it when I fall asleep. I like to bring a travel-size of my Bioderma Cleansing Water with me with some cotton pads just to cleanse and refresh my skin throughout the flight. Above are some of the things I carry on with me for easy access in-flight and are all pretty self-explanatory.

VITAMIN C! Also, a little boost of vitamin C is a good idea as it’s really easy to catch a cold on a plane! This is the water bottle that I poured a packet of Emergen-C into. The taste leaves something to be desired, but it gets the job done. I don’t always get sick when I don’t do this but the only times I’ve ever gotten sick after a flight are when I haven’t taken it.

READ! I don’t always have a lot of time to read which is why I love to fly because it gives me an opportunity to catch up on books that I didn’t really get the chance to otherwise. Most of my books these days are on my iPad but I prefer an actual physical copy over the digital versions any day even though they’re heavier to lug around the airport. On my last flight home to New York from Toronto, I read this book called The Now Effect.
