I’ve always been fascinated with the beauty secrets of old Hollywood actresses. Think about it — this was before all the advancements of photo-retouching and before botox and other injectables were just a lunch hour visit away. These women had to actually pull off extreme glamour without the technology available to us today. While some of their methods are probably a tad impractical for the everyday woman — I mean, who’s got the time to unglue themselves from a dress and tweet at the same time? — they are interesting!
If you look at your reflection closely, you might notice that there are fine and light hairs all over your face. Good news is, you’re not a freak! Most of us have some kind of peach fuzz on our faces. Glamour icons, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, were no exception. Marilyn & Liz were both known to shave their faces so that their skin would reflect light better and appear more glowy and radiant on camera. Another added bonus to shaving besides hair removal was exfoliation.
Temporary Face Lifts
Actresses such as Marlene Dietrich and Lucille Ball were also fans of using surgical tape to pull their facial skin tighter. They’d hide the tape underneath wigs. Today, celebrities such as Cher have been caught with “facelift tape” sticking out. Confession time: there have been instances where I’ve felt and – more importantly – looked really tired and needed a good “pick-me-up” and have a similar trick that doesn’t involve tape or a wig. The Original Bodycon Dress
Way before the bandage dresses worn by every single woman born in the past 40 years at least 100 times, Marilyn Monroe was up to thangs. Known for her figure and not wanting anyone to forget it, Marilyn would often be sewn into her dresses and sometimes would even go so far as to have the fabric glued onto her skin! (Imagine the removal process!) The skintight wardrobe would only add to her allure by exaggerating her signature “wiggle”. Of course, if all that failed, she would also have a quarter of an inch shaved off of one of her heels to make up for it.
To open up Rita Hayworth’s face, she would “raise” her hairline by having an inch of it removed through many, many electrolysis treatments. Kim Kardashian is known to have done something similar to her own hairline. In Kim’s case, she used laser hair removal to tidy up and remove baby hairs. Confession time continued: I once had my hairline waxed. I wasn’t so pleased with the results and ended up faking baby hairs by trimming strands around my “new hairline” to soften it. Luckily, I’m Greek so it didn’t take too long for my hairline to return to normal.
