My current obsession — bone broth.
I know that at first blush, “bone broth” sounds kind of…strange? But trust me, it’s not only delicious but also, so good for you.
Bone broth is made from the simmering of bones in water over a period of HOURS — think 18-24!
Why is it good for you? Bone broth is rich in minerals and collagen which are excellent for the health of your gut, immune system, and reducing inflammation. It’s also great for the skin, hair, and nails. Some people claim it’s like “Mother Nature’s botox.”
1. It’s Good for Your Skin
A healthy gut lining leads to better digestion and helps your body absorb nutrients better. This can be very beneficial to the health and quality of your skin.
It’s NOT just a rich source of collagen but also ONE OF THE ONLY FOODS with any collagen at all. Collagen is the key to skin elasticity. As we age, as early as our mid-to-late 20s, the body stops producing collagen all together which means a decrease in skin elasticity which is why we get fine lines, wrinkles, and saggy skin.
Unlike anti-aging skincare products that contain collagen, the molecules are too large to penetrate the skin and be effective.
Drinking bone broth is an excellent way to absorb collagen, from the inside out, to promote skin elasticity & keep your skin looking younger for longer.
2. Stronger Teeth! Longer & Healthier Hair! Oh, and It’s Good for Your Nails, Too!
Confession — I’m a bit of a jaw-clencher. Especially when under stress or simply very focused on a task. If you guys have any tips, please DM me on instagram! Lol
Bone Broth is rich in calcium & magnesium which are fabulous for your dental health. They promote healthier, stronger teeth and help prevent cavities.
& Of course, collagen isn’t just good for your skin but also your hair and nails!
3. Boosts Your Metabolism
Bone broth also contains gelatin which speeds up your metabolism.
Whose metabolism couldn’t use a little boost?
The list of benefits in bone broth are endless and extend well beyond beauty. Do a little research and you’ll discover that many swear by it as a superfood that helps to not just smooth and plump the skin, perk up your metabolism and immune system, but also improve sleep and anxiety.
Of course, the quality of the bone broth is important. Organic is best. I like this one and order it in bulk on Amazon. I drink one of these almost everyday around whenever I want to unwind a bit and transition into “bedtime mode.”
There’s a lot you can do with bone broth, you can use it about the same way you might use a stock. But, I’m all about no-muss-no-fuss, just gimme the benefits and make it quick. All I do is simply pour out one of these into a small saucepan and heat it up. You don’t want to boil it, that can really mess up the taste. Just bring it to a little simmer and pour it into a mug.
(Btw, you can make your own bone broth as well. There are many bone broth recipes available on the internet.)
My favorite bone broth is this organic Turkey one, but I’ll be honest, it can be a bit bland. To jazz it up, I squeeze in some lemon, I sprinkle in some of this pink himalayan sea salt (Theodore Leaf mentioned in a video of his that it’s what he likes to use in soups, so obviously I’m going to copy him!), crack in some black pepper. I’m Greek, so I even like to do a bit of oregano, it’s like my secret ingredient in everything! You can add whatever you like really. Anything goes.
I find that when I drink bone broth regularly my skin looks better, I feel lighter, I’m more relaxed, and life is just a bit more manageable.
PS — It’s no secret that the key ingredient in bone broth as far as beauty is concerned is collagen. If you’re not into the idea of sipping on bone broth, try this collagen powder, instead. It’s flavorless and can be added to cold or hot beverages. Theodore actually sent me this stuff & sparked my whole quest for collagen!
