Elvira: Mistress of The Dark Makeup Tutorial

by Jessica Harlow on October 5, 2009

Elvira Mistress of the Dark

Other girls grew up looking up to Barbie, Cinderella, even Madonna, as their role models. Me, I grew up looking up to Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. I just LOVED her! What was not to love about her character? She had a killer body, was sexy in a dark sort of way, and well, I just loved her cheesy, white-trash sense of humor.

I had been wanting to dress up as Elvira for YEARS! I think it’s a Capricorn thing. My mom, a Capricorn, dressed up as Elvira for a Halloween party when I was six. My best friend’s mom, also a Capricorn, has dressed up as Elvira before. So, I guess it was only time that my astrological fate caught up to me! Haha. I think I subconsciously started making videos on YouTube as an excuse to do this kind of makeup on myself whenever I felt like it.

Anyway, enough of my yapping! On to the product list and photos from my recreation of my childhood hero’s makeup! I wish I had the costume, I would have really gone all out and dressed like her. I have the legs for it! ;)

I love your take on this! I've always looked up to Elvira. Maybe I'll make good use of this tutorial for Halloween… I haven't decided what I'm going as yet.

Also, can we expect a review of BHCosmetics in the future? I'm always on the lookout for good shadows, but I don't have the money to spare right now for something that I may not be satisfied with… :)

BHCosmetics sells the same kinds of palettes as Coastal Scents that you can pretty much find on eBay if you just type in "120 palette" or "88 palette". The palettes are made by neither BHCosmetics or Coastal Scents, however, I recommend BHCosmetics because I have had better experiences with their company, they are more reliable than most sellers on eBay, and they're shipping and handling rates are more reasonable than their competitors. I do like 120 palette, you cannot get that many eye shadows anywhere for such a value. I will not say that those shadows are the best in quality that I have ever come across but they are very acceptable. I like the quality of the shadows in the 120 palettes more than those in the 88 palettes. Plus, the shadows are larger in the 120 palette. Basically, if you are looking to play with some colors but don't want to spend too much money, this is a good way to go. If you have a good eye shadow base such as UDPP or Too Faced's Shadow Insurance or Beauty From the Earth's Eye & Lip Primer, you will definitely enjoy the 120 palette even more.

Wonderful, thank you Jessica! :) I'll definitely be looking into these when I get paid again… I just used up all of my spending money on ModCloth. It's addictive!

You make a great Elvira! I'm a Capricorn and i've never really wanted to be(dress up as) Elvira very much, but I do love the whole dark and sexy thing. My capricorn friend tends to be drawn more towards being a doll or a glamorous realistic looking princess. Maybe you guys share rising signs or something.

Amazing!!!! I was Elvira for Halloween about 20 years ago. I wish I would have had the tutorial back then. Well, 20 years later, I am gonna try to pull it off once again!!!! I have been practicing on the make up but I have to admit that its a bit harder now that I am older. My daughter works at Sephora and has agreed to help me out.(Thank God!!!) I am sure with your tutorial she will do an amazing job. Thank you so much for posting it on youtube. I can't wait to share it with you!! Thanks Again!!!

hey, jessica,

just wanted to thank you very much for this tutorial for elvira makeup. i’m going to be 29 next week and i’ll make a costume party with the theme “which film character are you?”. just like you, i loved elvira from the very first time i watched the movie (very successful in brazil, by the way).
i’m a brazilian living in paris, so first i looked for brazilian and french tutorials, but none of them compare to yours! it’s amazing, you really are didactical!
i hope i’ll have a good result… if you’re interested, i can send you some pics! :)
(sorry about my english, french is definetely taking over my brain!)
